Melanie Phillips (via Andrew McCarthy) employs the phrase “profound moral corruption” to describe the fever infecting the British body politic leading so many to support Hamas vs. Israel in the current difficulties in Gaza.
She makes what seems in retrospect an obvious point which I think is lost on most, “The issue of Israel sits at the very apex of the fight to defend civilisation. Those who wish to destroy western civilisation need to destroy the Jews, whose moral precepts formed its foundation stones. The deranged hatred of the Jews lies at the core of the Islamists’ hatred of America, the ‘infidel’ west and modernity, and is the reason why they wish to destroy Israel. Unless people in the west understand that Israel’s fight is their own fight, they will be on the wrong side of the war to defend not just the west but civilisation in general.”
Is there any doubt that she is correct? Further is there any doubt that “profound moral corruption” is behind all of the significant ills plaguing the West in the 21st century? From the economic (CRA, Chris Dodd, Madoff, sub-prime mortgage backed securities), to the cultural (fatherless families, abortion, redefining marriage, pornography), to sports, to international affairs that she is writing about, it is a corruption of values, Western values, Judeo-Christian values. Certainly the history of man is a study in moral struggles, but it is one thing for one man to fail to live up to the mores of a society, it is another for the society as a whole to distort those standards into a self-destructive heap of relativistic rubble.
Though it appears to be, it’s not too late.
